How Can Therapy Help?
Therapy looks at how problems from the past are maintained in the "here and now" and in the past. It helps people to learn new methods of coping and problem solving which can be used for the rest of their lives.
During therapy you will learn how to notice your own thoughts, reflections, and behaviors and to understand your own links and how you operate in the world.
It is a structured approach - you agree goals for treatment with your therapist and try things out between sessions. You can also work out what schedule you would also like.
Common factors leading to psychological distress often includes the following:
Unhelpful Behaviours (e.g. avoidance, withdraw, bingeing or substance use);
Unhelpful Thoughts (e.g. looking at the worst part of an experience).
Negative emotional states (e.g. hopelessness, or guilt).
Physical symptoms (e.g. lack of energy or heart palpitations).
Life events (e.g. trauma, stress, or death)
How effective is therapy?
An Integrative CBT approach is used. There can be relational and social issues to consider. Family and systemic issues. We are all part of our environment. A Humanistic and Psychodynamic understanding of your own issues. My training has originally be in the psychodynamic and then moved integratively through a spectrum of different approaches.
I Have been trained in both an Integrative and CBT approach. CBT has been found to be one of the most effective treatments for conditions where anxiety or depression is the main problem. It is the most effective psychological treatment for moderate and severe depression. It is as effective as antidepressants for many types of depression. CBT or CT was founded by Aaron Becks in Philadelphia. It was originally used for depression. It is now applicable to a whole range of symptoms and issues. His daughter Judith Becks is also a therapist and trainer of CT (Cognitive Therapy) at The Becks Institute in Philadelphia.Our thoughts and beliefs affect our behaviours, moods and physical experiences. The way we perceive an event can determine our emotional, behavioural and physiological responses to that event. It is evidence-based-practice that utilizes the research findings to develop theraputic interventions. According to National Institute for Clinical Excellence ( NICE), CBT is clinically proven to be effective and treatment of choice for a number of mental health issues including: anxiety, depression, bulimia, post traumatic stress disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder.
CBT is also about emotions - it is not contrary to popular myth only about thoughts. Many CBT therapists are also interested in the spiritual and the deeper aspects of life. It is not a superficial nor just scratches the surface. Good CBT therapists also are able to reach many areas of life. It is however, at foremost an outcome approach and works to achieve the objectives patients want.
Some Frequently Asked Questions
Q.) How quickly will I be seen?
A.) An appointment is usually made to fit in with your requirements. If you need an appointment urgently every effort will be made to offer one within a week or two.
Q.) How many sessions will I need?
A.) It should be possible to indicate roughly how many sessions you will need after your initial assessment. Session can vary. Some have a few sessions. Some have therapy for much longer time periods. It can vary depending upon the clients requirements. For some it will only be one or two sessions if it is for a small issue. But I will only have more of an idea after an assessment.
B) If longer sessions are required then these can vary. This varies from individual to individual and depending upon the issues and approach the client prefers.
Q.) Are appointments weekly?
A.) Yes they are usually once a week, and then can be phased down with the option for the occasional follow-up to help you maintain your progress.
Q.) Is my treatment confidential?
A.) Your treatment is carried out in complete confidentiality. I am an accredited psychotherapist with the UKCP and abide by their code of ethics.
Q.) What happens at the initial consultation?
A.) We discuss the issue at hand and the underlying theories and practice underpinning the treatment in order to establish a strategy and goals for achieving your objective. This will vary depending upon the approach you are looking for. I am an integrative psychotherapist and have had training in many approaches. This allows me to look at other possibilities which may be of assistance to you.
Q.) Can I talk to you before we meet?
A.) It is my usual practice to speak to each client prior to our first session.
Q.) How long are sessions?
A.) Sessions are 50 minutes in length.
Q.) Do you offer day and evening sessions?
A.) I offer both daytime and evening slots.
Phone sessions are also available based upon request and can use skype for international calls.
Q. How much notice do I need to give to cancel or rearrange an appointment?
A.) I have a busy practice and require 48 hours notice for cancellation or rearrangement as the time and clients are set ahead in my West London practice. If not cancelled in time then payment is due.
I take breaks around Christmas, Easter and Summer and will give you as much notice as possible. Missed appointments outside of agreed holiday periods will need to be paid for so I can hold the space for you, however I will always try and rearrange your appointment where possible.
Q. How much do you charge?
A.) It costs £100 for a CBT session. Reduced rates are available for Nurses and Teachers.
